Standing more than 1,000 feet above the mesa shelf, Factory Butte is a testament to the steady power of natural forces forever crafting the landscape. Taken on August 25, 2024 at 6:56pm MDT.

Obtaining this photograph was a hike – literally. From where we parked, I jogged nearly two miles and found myself among eroded hills towering 10, 20, even 40 feet above my head, climbing down one side and up the other again. This was no easy feat: erosion rates of more than one inch per year cause the ground to be loose and squishy, my feet often sinking two or three inches into the dirt just to take my next step.
