A cloudy morning dimmed the typical shine of sandstone at Arches, creating a flattened background of thunder clouds ready to unleash across the park. Taken from the northern rim of the bowl across from Delicate Arch on August 23, 2024 at 7:06am MDT.

Driving into the park before 7am meant I got to skip the $2.00 timed entry Arches uses. In the still-dark hours of 6am, the silhouettes of rocky behemoths rose out of the desert all around me during the 30-minute drive to the Delicate Arch trailhead. Although only a two-mile hike, most of it is uphill and you cross a massive rock slab that leaves you exposed in the heat of the day. Bring water!
