Sunset turned the green prairie golden, with a clear sky prepared to show off the cosmic wonders of the night. Venus and Mercury twinkled above the burning horizon, and the waxing gibbous Moon hung high to the east. Taken March 9, 2025 at 7:25pm EDT.

Knowing I would soon leave Florida behind as the stars aligned to set me on a new journey, I took an opportunity to visit the Everglades. Admittedly, I went on this trip more out of obligation than any real desire to visit because I managed to live in Florida for nearly seven years without heading down that way. I joke that “if you’ve done one trail in Florida, you’ve done them all.” But if we set the hyperbole aside, Everglades was a wonderful little getaway for a hiker who didn’t have time to do the airboat sightseeing. I appreciate the biodiversity, the newly untouched splendor, and of course, the stargazing. I can only imagine how the dark skies would appear without the gibbous Moon directly above.
