Description
Colors began to deepen as sunset took hold over this expanse of rolling gypsum dunes. Taken facing north on June 17, 2024 at 6:43pm MDT.
Approaching the park from the west brings you out of Las Cruces, down the eastern slopes of the San Andreas Mountains, and along a desert road that passes missile ranges on both sides. You’ll cross through a border patrol station, and then the entrance of White Sands National Park is only another mile or so up the highway. This was my final stop on a three-week, 6000-mile Arizona road trip in June 2024. Watching sunset here was the perfect sendoff to my first-ever solo road trip across the United States.
You may notice the smoke behind the word SAND: this was the South Fork and Salt wildfires that erupted in Lincoln National Forest and Mescalero Tribal Lands, forcing the evacuation of 15,000 people and burning more than 23,000 acres.
